Excel for Beginnners

A Saturday morning introductory course for absolute beginners to Microsoft Excel. Learn the basics of using this popular spreadsheet program and be able to do simple calculations and to draw up simple budgets and reports.

Introduction to ArcGIS (with reference to exploration geology and other industries)

This course will aim to cover all the basic concepts generally covered in introductory level GIS courses with a bias on earth science applications. Examples will be derived from other areas such as the oil and gas industry, catchment management, informal settlement upgrading and will be primarily based on the tutor's involvement in the private and research sectors.

While the basic lectures/ exercises will focus on introductory GIS level concepts, these sessions will be interspersed with brief presentations utilizing slightly more involved procedures - the aim thereof to show the student the potential of the GIS tool. The types of examples that will be touched on will include: Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM), landsat ETM, ASTER and other satellite imagery for base metal / diamond exploration; integration of aeromagnetics, gravity, geochemistry and other geological data for exploration; pipeline manangement in the North Sea; contouring of stream sediment data; proximity analysis associated with faults; groundwater-related thematic mapping; informal settlement density and growth rate spatial-temporal modelling etc. These side applications will touch on the possibilities of other ArcGIS modules such as Spatial Analyst and slightly on other GIS software.

The content of the lectures and exercises will represent a synthesis of topics typically covered over several introductory courses (+-10 days). Topics will include items such as:

    GIS data concepts:
  • Raster/Vector/Projections
  • Data capture/ Database building:
  • Views/Layers/Data frames/Toolbars/Menus/Metadata/Shapefiles
  • Features/Attributes/Joining Tables/Editing/Georeferencing/Scales
    Data visualization:
  • Symbolizing/Thematic Mapping/Classifying & Labelling
  • Raster display tools, Graph wizard
    Data Analysis:
  • Querying Data, Buffers, Overlays, Statistics
  • Data selection (by Attributes/Location)
    ArcToolBox
  • Spatial Analyst (Map Algebra, Contouring, Hillshading)
    Data Presentation:
  • Maps & Layouts

    The course is primarily geared to managers / professionals with little / no exposure to GIS, who are faced with the task of seeing how it can best be applied within their organization. Anyone with a very basic understanding of computers and a curious nature will derive benefit and hopefully enjoy it!

    Introduction to Programming

    Programming is not so complicated especially with Edward's fun intro course where you'll learn to make a number guessing game in Python - a popular programming language which is the favourite of millions of programmers and companies like Google. Facilitator: Edward van Kuik

    PHP & MySQL Development

    A practical workshop introduction course to database driven websites using PHP and MySQL. Participants need to have some knowledge of any programming language and should know some basic HTML. At the end of the course you will have created a simple database driven website where users can register, log in, add/edit/delete records and upload files.
