Introduction to ArcGIS
Introduction to ArcGIS (with reference to exploration geology and other industries)
Examples will be derived from other areas such as the oil and gas industry, catchment management, informal settlement upgrading and will be primarily based on the tutor's involvement in the private and research sectors.
While the basic lectures/ exercises will focus on introductory GIS level concepts, these sessions will be interspersed with brief presentations utilizing slightly more involved procedures - the aim thereof to show the student the potential of the GIS tool. The types of examples that will be touched on will include: Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM), landsat ETM, ASTER and other satellite imagery for base metal / diamond exploration; integration of aeromagnetics, gravity, geochemistry and other geological data for exploration; pipeline manangement in the North Sea; contouring of stream sediment data; proximity analysis associated with faults; groundwater-

for constructing database queries and table schemas.
* Sequel also includes a lightweight but comprehensive ORM layer for
mapping records to Ruby objects and handling associated records.
* Sequel supports advanced database features such as prepared
statements, bound variables, stored procedures, master/slave
configurations, and database sharding.
* Sequel makes it easy to deal with multiple records without having to
break your teeth on SQL.
* Sequel currently has adapters for ADO, Amalgalite, DataObjects, DB2,
DBI, Firebird, Informix, JDBC, MySQL, ODBC, OpenBase, Oracle,
PostgreSQL and SQLite3.

Intro to Programming in PHP
The first part of the workshop will be a introduction to some of the PHP tools that are useful. The second part is interactive workshop where each student tries to implement the 'Number Guessing Game'.
The 'Number Guessing Game' is a very simple game where the computer thinks of a random number between 1 and 10. The user has to try and guess the number. The computer will respond by saying whether the number is too high or too low.
If there is time, we can move onto part 2 which is just the other way round, where we try and get the computer to guess the number that the user is thinking of.
Things you will learn:
- How to create a simple web application.
- How to capture data from a form in PHP
- How to store variable, compare variables.
- How to store variables for a user session.

The content of the lectures and exercises will represent a synthesis of topics typically covered over several introductory courses. Topics will include items such as:
Overviews of:
- GIS/ArcGIS/ArcCatalogue/ArcMap/ArcExplorer
GIS data concepts:
- Raster/Vector/Projections
- Data capture/ Database building:
- Views/Layers/Data frames/Toolbars/Menus/Metadata/Shapefiles
- Features/Attributes/Joining Tables/Editing/Georeferencing/Scales
Data visualization:
- Symbolizing/Thematic Mapping/Classifying & Labelling
- Raster display tools, Graph wizard
Data Analysis:
- Querying Data, Buffers, Overlays, Statistics
- Data selection (by Attributes/Location)
ArcToolBox
- Spatial Analyst (Map Algebra, Contouring, Hillshading)
Data Presentation:
The course is primarily geared to managers / professionals with little / no exposure to GIS, who are faced with the task of seeing how it can best be applied within their organization. Anyone with a very basic understanding of computers and a curious nature will derive benefit and hopefully enjoy it!
